Director, Real Estate Investment Fund - National Coverage Group, Real Estate Banking


On a national basis, the Director is responsible for contributing to the profitable growth and quality of the National Commercial Real Estate Banking portfolio across Canada by originating and structuring complex credit solutions for Real Estate Investment Fund clients.  Activities include identifying target clients, developing strategy, prospecting, risk analysis, deal structuring, pricing, negotiation and presentation on highly complex deals as part of the “deal team”.  

You will interface directly with clients, prospects and referral sources and the real estate banking teams. The Director will also provide leadership and guidance and handle relationship management of an assigned portfolio of Real Estate Investment Funds including origination and credit underwriting. 

The Director will build a team with origination and execution functions. As well, the Director liaises with Global Risk Management (GRM) through the credit decision-making process.

This position reports to Director and Head, Real Estate Investment Fund National Coverage Group and will manager Direct reports.



1.    Develop goals and strategies for the Real Estate Investment Fund national coverage group and leads the Team in executing their plans in support of the Bank’s / Business Line’s objectives for profitability and risk management by:

•    Building up a team and Leading the team to meet the needs and potential of the marketplace;
•    Setting goals and ensuring execution of plans for deals originated through Real Estate Investment Funds; 
•    Contributing to the sales effort and by leading the team to achieve the National Commercial Real Estate Banking profit plan goals and overall improved return on transactions
•    Conducting Client and referral source presentations to promote the Group and discussing the financing options/solutions;
•    Resolving issues/negotiating compromises between team members and partners from other Scotiabank Groups (i.e. Enterprise Solutions, Capital Markets, Syndications, Global Risk Management, Strategic Alliance Partners, Global Banking and Markets etc.) to meet objectives/overcome obstacles, guiding team members to alternatives if required.


2.    Contribute to the profitable development of National Commercial Credit business by: 

•    Synthesizing information from multiple sources and recommending alternative terms, conditions and covenants to provide a viable banking proposal to the client within sound credit lending practices;
•    Ensuring the timely analysis, structure and presentation of complex credit / financial solutions proposals;
•    Providing prompt and sound recommendations in the structuring, pricing, due diligence, analysis and adjudication of credit proposals;
•    Restructuring marginal proposals into bankable deals where possible;
•    Ensuring quality of credit presentations prepared within the group through review and sign-off of credit proposals
•    Ensuring the integrity of risk ratings, risk identification and mitigation
•    Providing direction and coaching to the team on effective due diligence for transactions
•    Adhering to any regulatory and internal Bank policies and requirements;
•    Maintaining adherence to the Bank’s Anti-Money Laundering program and Guidelines for Business Conduct, by reporting any unusual occurrences or fraudulent activities per established procedures.


3.    Provide relationship coverage to an assigned group of Real Estate Investment Funds on a national basis by:
•    Developing and executing a detailed call program, fostering and maintaining strong relationships with the key principals of real estate investment fund customers in order to originate new opportunities for financing and or other banking services and products
•    Participating in Client and Referral Source meetings in complex lending situations;
•    Conducting client and referral source presentations to promote the Group and/or present credit options/solutions


4.    Provide Advice and “Hands-On” Advisory Services (as applicable) for Real Estate Commercial Bankers on a National basis by:
•    Providing advice on various types and sizes of deals for complex financings e.g. syndications, acquisitions, capital call facilities, etc.;
•    Providing guidance to Real Estate Commercial Bankers with the fundamental responsibility for transferring and embedding knowledge in structure, negotiation, and execution of complex deals

5.    Contributes to the professional development of the Real Estate Investment Fund National Coverage Group by:
•    Participating in the identification of the team’s overall developmental needs through evaluations of the quality and adequacy of submissions and recommendations;
•    Providing coaching and guidance to Directors, Associate Directors and Associates;
•    Assisting in the professional development of the Group through evaluation of performance and recommendations for career progression and any accreditation.


Education / Experience / Other Information:
•    Graduate/Undergraduate degree in Business or Economics or work equivalency
