Position: Director, Head of U.S. Policy Management, Global Risk Management

 

Purpose

 

Ensure that U.S. policies and procedures are developed and implemented to provide a foundation for proper risk management and sound corporate governance across U.S., working closely work with all business lines, control / support functions, and senior management.

 

Accountabilities

 

Policy Management

  • Enhance the policy management framework and maintain the documentation standards including, but not limited to, the following:
    • Definition of the documentation types and hierarchies (e.g., framework, policy, procedure, guideline, etc.).
    • Review and approval structure based on the documentation types and hierarchies.
    • Documentation templates based on the documentation types.
    • Consistent style guide.

 

  • Administer policy governance which includes providing a policy management tool to discharge the policy document owner's responsibility.
    • Manage and maintain policy documents and templates through the policy management tool (repository and workflow).
    • Maintain a repository for the suite of SBUS policy documents and other related documents.
    • Publish policy documents released by the content manager or policy document owner.
    • Develop and provide reporting on policy document status and policy management initiatives.

 

  • As the Scotiabank U.S. policy management tool contract owner, assist in the rollout plan and implementation/training for global departments and other regions regarding the policy management tool. Also, act as an advisor in non-U.S. policy management tool selection processes, ensure quality review during implementation, and ensure U.S. consistency where applicable. 

 

General

  • Lead and drive a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, capabilities, systems, and knowledge.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

 

  • Create an environment in which their  team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct, and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions, and conduct risk.
  • Build a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops, and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviors; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.

Direct Reports: Senior Manager, U.S. Policy Specialist; Analyst, U.S. Policy Specialist

  • Excels in the leadership and implementation of business planning processes while developing strategies to meet future challenges; leads major initiatives focused on risk management and improved collaboration, as well as internal process improvement and efficiency.
  • Support all business units within SBUS.

 

Education / Experience / Other Information

  • Requires at least a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline. Master’s degree recognized professional designation in a specialized area of finance or business, or equivalent, is an asset.
  • Over 10 years of progressively higher levels of responsibility in financial services industry.
  • Highly experienced in risk management with focus and development of governance frameworks, standards setting, and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Brings an in-depth and highly contemporary knowledge of the evolving risk management environment.
  • Knowledge of understanding of regulatory issues in the U.S.
  • Leadership skills as demonstrated by the management of a team of risk management professionals and ability to influence and hold accountable persons and teams.
  • Able to balance competing or conflicting goals of various departments, countries, and stakeholders, requiring a mature, diplomatic approach and highly developed negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and presentation skills for developing communication strategies for senior executives, management committees, and the Board approval.
  • In addition to providing training, mentoring, and coaching internally, ability to effectively liaise with industry participants, regulatory bodies, and various other external and internal parties.
  • Solid working knowledge of different types of financial and non-financial risk management frameworks and processes.
  • Strong relationship building skills to build effective working relationships with divisional and corporate leaders.
  • Highly organized with an ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Creative problem solving and the ability to motivate others and implement new solutions.

 

Working Conditions

  • Significant amount of information flows through this position requiring the ability to review, assimilate, prioritize, and make decisions.
  • Non-physical and require extended periods of time at the computer.
  • Occasional extended hours as needed.
  • We are currently on a hybrid office work model, which is subject to change, and the position requires work in the office.
  • Location: Dallas, TX
