Purpose

 

The Quality Assurance Functional Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the success of the Quality Assurance function within Global Operations Technology – Canadian Banking Engineering. This position is responsible for overseeing and planning testing activities for new and modified systems that impact Canadian Banking Operations.

The Enterprise Technology Quality Assurance team evaluates the quality and risk of changes or enhancements to Canadian Banking applications. Its goal is to ensure that all changes are thoroughly tested and validated before implementation for use by Operations Teams globally.

Additionally, this role manages and controls changes to banking application systems to maintain system integrity within the production environment. The manager ensures that all activities comply with governing regulations, internal policies, and established procedures.

 

Accountability

 

•  The QA Functional Manager will lead and review testing for CBE applications and systems by evaluating requirements and design documentation, creating, and reviewing test strategies and workday estimates, preparing comprehensive test documentation, and participating in daily testing activities. This role involves closely monitoring testing progress, assessing defects, and balancing risk mitigation with optimal resource utilization, while ensuring adherence to Best Practices, Methodologies, Guiding Principles, Standards, and Procedures.

•  The QA Manager must work under tight deadlines, conflicting priorities and changing requirements.

•  The QA Manager must be able to react quickly to contribute to the resolution of issues, work overtime to meet deadlines and to implement systems with minimal impact to the Business users.

•  Assess multiple, overlapping projects with stringent timelines and appraise outstanding issues with the potential of impacting the promotion of initiatives to the Production environment, providing suggestions to minimize associated risks.

• Provide guidance to the testing team and members of the project teams, consisting of analysts with varying degrees of knowledge, providing ongoing support to current initiatives, knowledge transfer, and support to individual team members to increase performance.

• Contribute to maintaining a stable, professional environment while ensuring department objectives are clearly understood and achieved.

•  Assist with the coordination of testing activities with other departments and interpret detailed information provided by technical support staff. Participate in forward-planning sessions and identify/resolve conflicts between initiatives.

•   Contribute to the successful implementation of solutions for systems and projects, supporting complex business applications with complex integration needs across multiple technology disciplines.

•   Provide input to the project team to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency of testing.

•   Requires limited management direction and manages extremely complex problems.

 

Education / Experience / Other Information 

  • A degree in computer science, IT Business/Management or engineering related discipline is desirable.
  • Must have 3-5 years’ experience working in Testing area.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a role related to Banking Systems, involving multiple integration points with various databases and systems for data feeds, is highly desirable.
  • 2–3 years of hands-on experience in integrated systems testing and managing the testing of business applications.
  • Strong English language communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to interact with Senior Management; complete presentations or provide status updates.
  • Ability to address all project related issues and conflicts within the testing cycle.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning to ensure the delivery of quality applications.
  • Working knowledge of JIRA, and Confluence.
  • Knowledge of Project Management principles.
  • Knowledge of the use of MS Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Project.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Independent, responsible, accountable, results-driven, and eager to learn in a fast-paced, complex environment are essential qualities for this position.
  • Familiarity with automated testing tools like Selenium, Playwright, etc.
  • Familiarity in systems design (Agile, Waterfall) and a solid understanding of SDLC, QA and integration testing methodologies.

 

AUTHORITY/ DECISION MAKING/ DIRECTION RECEIVED:

 

  • Day-to-day decisions regarding approaches to testing are managed independently by the incumbent.
  • Incumbent is responsible for most recommendations for strategic resource planning and code delivery.
  • High degree of discretion and independent judgment to determine work priorities, allocation of resources and approval of code delivery to UAT and Production.
  • Priorities must be constantly evaluated and reorganized daily to provide directions to a large test team.
  • Tight project deadlines necessitate arriving at decisions/ recommendations within minutes. Problems encountered can have a major impact on the integrity of projects delivered to the Production environment. Corrective action must be based on accurate risk analysis.
  • Recommendations for the resolution of issues with complex implications are presented to senior management.
  • Limited direction is provided by the Quality Assurance Functional Senior Manager.
  • The incumbent is required to act on behalf of the Quality Assurance Functional Senior Manager during periods of absence.
