Purpose


Contributes to the overall success of the Settlements & Clearing team in Toronto, Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

Accountabilities 

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  • Ability to deal with daily issues/changes in retail and trading products as they impact Securities Clearing
  • Strong general time management skills that include prioritization, team support, and human relation skills in order to assist management with change and motivation.
  • Ability to maintain processes seamlessly in a rapidly changing environment regarding policies, procedures, automated systems and client needs.
  • Understand securities markets and types, industry standards for custody, clearing and settlements
  • Contributing to the preparation of associated manuals, guides, and procedures.
  • Contributing to the resolution of operational problems ensuring appropriate action is taken to prevent recurrence.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
  • Champions a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
  • Investigate, monitor, and resolve securities position breaks, including discrepancies arising from dual ADP codes, through detailed validation of security reference data, position adjustments, and booking of accounting entries to ensure full front-to-back position and ledger integrity.
  • Manage and investigate Settlement Payment Obligations (SPOs) via DTCC, ensuring timely settlement, accurate instruction validation, root-cause analysis of settlement failures, and effective resolution of counterparty discrepancies.
  • Calculate, validate, and process interest payments to counterparties, in accordance with contractual terms and market conventions, resolving cash breaks and ensuring accurate and timely payment execution.
  • Perform in-depth settlements investigations across clearing and custody functions, addressing failed trades, unmatched positions, and cash discrepancies in a high-volume, time-sensitive environment.
  • Ensure seamless execution of settlement and payment processes in a rapidly evolving operational landscape, adapting to changes in policies, procedures, automated systems, and client requirements.
  • Contribute to the resolution of complex operational issues, identifying root causes, implementing corrective actions, and supporting control enhancements to prevent recurrence of settlement-related breaks.
  • Support the development and maintenance of operational documentation, including procedures, manuals, and investigation playbooks related to settlements, clearing, and payment processing.
  • Apply the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture to daily activities, ensuring adherence to operational risk frameworks, regulatory requirements, and internal controls across settlements and clearing operations.
  • Drive operational efficiency and control discipline, prioritizing investigative activities to meet settlement deadlines, regulatory standards, and service level expectations.

 

Education / Experience / Other Information (include only those that are specific to the role)

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics or related fields.
  • Knowledge of Capital Markets; and various financial instruments across Fixed Income and Equities
  • 1-3 year of experience in financial services / reconciliation procedures / accounting
  • Excellent communication skills, with strong negotiation and strategic influencing skills.
  • Expert knowledge of Bank’s products, policies and services.
  • Good understanding and awareness of strategic and tactical business planning and executional issues/processes.
  • Adaptability to operate in a rapidly changing environment regarding policies, procedures, automation, and client needs
  • Results focused to identify and take action on any issues/concerns/processes in a timely matter.
  • Very good analytical & problem-solving skills and sound judgment needed to critically examine reconciliations, their operations & processes including in depth knowledge of the settlement department processes and inputs from up and downstream systems.
  • Business/Finance degree
  • Excel intermediate to advanced level
  • Depos knowledge/experience is nice to have
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • English level advanced.

                                        

Working Conditions

  • Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence.  
  • The securities industry is a complex business and operates within a quasi-structured but rapidly changing environment with very tight deadlines where errors can result in substantial losses
  • New systems, procedures, conventions, regulations and continual changes in technology, processes and the industry cause the frequency and degree of change within the operation of the department / division, thereby adding / increasing stressful situations.  Constant demands on continually improving and implementing systems and procedures, requires on-going re-evaluation and prioritization of tasks and requires the incumbent to exhibit flexibility and the ability to work under tight times frames, complete reconciliations and processing adjustments within critical deadlines to avoid the risk of losses. 
  • The incumbent must be able to work with minimal supervision, manage several priorities simultaneously and faces frequent interruptions from staff, management and customers.
