Purpose

 

Reporting to the CEO, Tangerine Bank, the Managing Director, Digital Small Business provides strategic direction, leadership, and oversight of the development, launch and growth of Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) and creator propositions and business, developing a comprehensive digital SME solution to allow us to better serve the holistic needs of clients and advance our market position. This includes formulating strategy, creating mid-term business plans, and executing key initiatives to achieve desired business results. Strategically, this role must evolve Tangerine’s Digital SME value proposition to grow its leadership in Digital SME solutions, products, bundles, and offerings, leveraging the brand and integrated banking experience. This Leader is a key member of Tangerine's Leadership team and the Risk and Governance Committee, and must ensure that plans and initiatives are supported in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.  

 

 

Accountabilities

 

  • Client Focus and Relationship Management:
    • Cultivate a client-focused culture within their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
    • Drives new client growth through strengthening our relationship with key bank partners with a cohesive strategy that drives better client outcomes and shareholder value.
    • Partner closely with the Chief Client Officer to deliver client-centric SME offerings in line with the Tangerine brand and value proposition.
  • Strategy Development and Execution:
    • Develop and execute strategies to establish and maintain a differentiated market position, ensuring client satisfaction and loyalty for the SME business line, and driving stable, profitable growth.
    • Identify opportunities for new bundles, offerings, innovative tools and features, and distribution alternatives such as a SME marketplace, AI-driven banking (including chatbots), and payment solutions to serve SME clients and creators.
  • External Partnerships for SME client segment
    • Identify, analyze, structure, negotiate and manage Tangerine’s partnerships and other strategic initiatives that advance the development and implementation of the Tangerine strategic plans; lead the partnership negotiation process on behalf and in the best interest of the Bank (i.e. embedded finance / software partnerships).
    • Develop, cultivate, and manage partnerships such as embedded finance providers (for e.g. accounting software), Scotia business banking
  • Public Relations and Advocacy:
    • Engage in public relations as an ambassador of Tangerine’s Digital SME business.
  • Business Management:
    • Own the general management of the business, including profit and loss accountability.
    • Determine and manage the KPIs and KRIs for the business, including establishing departmental goals, projects, and operational initiatives aligned with key business objectives.
    • Oversee the budgeting process and assume ongoing accountability for operational expenses related to the business.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Internal Partnerships:
    • Build and maintain collaborative networks with key partners across the Bank
    • Champion the Tangerine value proposition to internal partners, including creating awareness of SME offerings and the breadth and depth of capabilities
    • Oversees the development and implementation of long and short-term strategies, initiatives and programs for increased collaboration between Tangerine and all internal and external partners.
    • Provide leadership to execute tactical plans through collaboration with key stakeholder functions, including Marketing, Service and Sales, Operations, and IT.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management:
    • Ensure compliance with the Regulatory Compliance Framework, including the Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing and Sanctions Policy, and all AML-related policies, procedures, and controls within the department.
    • Direct day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the company's risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits.
    • Communicate the company's risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout the team.
  • Additional Digital Expertise and Accountabilities:
    • Lead the digital transformation of Tangerine’s SME offering, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience.
    • Drive the adoption of emerging digital technologies and platforms to enhance offerings.
    • Oversee the integration of digital tools and features that improve client engagement and satisfaction.
    • Ensure the delivery of high-quality digital SME offerings that meet the evolving needs of our clients.
  • People Management and Development:
    • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
    • Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.

 

 

Education / Experience / Other Information

 

  • Strong strategic thinker and influencer with a track record of executing against plan
  • Minimum 10 years of banking management, or related SME experience
  • Experience with strategy, product management, and a digital or advanced technology product development and launch.
  • Excellent understanding of the creator / micro / SME segment opportunity, including policies and processes, servicing model, and products
  • Solid operational and Digital Banking experience to identify opportunities and hurdles in developing and executing strategies to optimize the customer experience
  • Experience working cross functionally to deliver exceptional client experiences.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory landscape and the competitive market of how propositions are delivered in Canada.
  • Effective interpersonal relationship-building and influencing skills within and outside the Bank, utilizing the ability to analyze complex relationships, interdependencies and situations and to act in a thorough and expeditious manner
  • Excellent knowledge of digital solutions, market trends, economic conditions, business processes and risk issues
  • Proven collaboration skills and experience in contributing to large, complex and diverse functions and projects
  • Results oriented and client-focused
  • Education/Experience
    • University Degree or equivalent experience
    • 5-10 years of leadership experience
  • Professional Certification
    • Relevant Professional Degree (MBA, CFA, or others) in good standing is preferred.
