Purpose of the Job:

This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a team supporting and delivering solutions to Scotiabank's Fixed Income Trading and Sales desks across Canada. The Application Support Specialist will join an experienced team, responsible for managing applications that offer pricing, risk, electronic / algorithmic trading and trade capture functionalities to the business. The role will involve 1st and 2nd line application support combined responsibilities, offering engagement with a broad range of stakeholders across Front and Middle Office, Product Control, Risk Management, Back Office, Application Development and Infrastructure teams.



  • Provide support to the trading desk for trading systems and the flow of trades downstream to settlement systems
  • Must be comfortable assessing trading systems components to investigate trade breaks, connectivity, and data issues
  • Ability to think logically, analyze and troubleshoot complex problems and drive them through to resolution Troubleshoot applications issues that could be related to the OS, local area network, or network connectivity to market venues
  • Monitor, install and upgrade applications that run in a Windows or Linux environment
  • Ability to cover rotating work shifts that cover the time window 6:30am to 6:00pm.
  • Participation in on -call pager rotation and readiness to provide afterhours support is a must
  • Participate in disaster recovery testing and maintain documentation related to business continuity planning


Minimum Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience with financial markets and technology
  • Good understanding of financial markets and products, in particular Fixed Income and Rates
  • Log debugging and technical root cause analysis
  • Knowledge of SQL query language or experience running queries to extract data from  Oracle and Sybase databases
  • Interpersonal and communication skills with good technical understanding in order to effectively liaise with business users and members of technical teams with minimal assistance.
  • Excellent organizational, facilitation and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Highly proactive, self-motivated and self-sufficient with the ability to learn new skills quickly



  • University or college degree in a related discipline (Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Technology) or equivalent work experience
  • A recognized designation or certification in information technology or finance is an asset
  • Knowledge of ION Trading Systems, particularly PXE, Refdata and Anvil, as well as Bloomberg, Candeal, Montreal Exchange, CBID, Shorcan , Nasdaq NFI
  • Knowledge of Windows Desktop, Windows Server 2008/12, Linux, networking technologies and network protocols an asset
