Requisition ID: 232880

Join a purpose driven winning team, committed to results, in an inclusive and high-performing culture.

Financial Planning is a cornerstone of the MD Signature Private Wealth Management (MDS) offer. In MDS we work with some of Canada’s most successful physicians and their families to provide end-to-end financial planning services, tailored to meet our client’s unique needs. The Senior Financial Planner (SFP) provides customized financial planning to our MDS clients with investable household assets of $3,000,000 or more.

The SFP is the subject matter expert on financial planning.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Expert Level Client Discovery
MDS Discovery meetings are a key component of our client value proposition.
In this meeting SFPs will go beyond the surface level and help our clients uncover what is most important today and in the future. This often involves the cocreation of goals and objectives with our client.
This meeting dives deep into our client’s family dynamics, core values, future vision, goals, and finances.
    Customized, goals-based financial planning
After MDS Discovery, the SFP will analyze all relevant client data (both qualitative and quantitative) and prepare a customized MDS Financial Plan.
Working in partnership with a client’s Advisor the SFP will then present this plan, including: the MDS Financial Plan, and MDS Executive Summary letter (with prioritized next steps to facilitate plan implementation).
The SFP will apply professional judgement in using the appropriate level of internal resources to prepare the MDS Financial Plan, based on complexity, client circumstances and need. The SFP will sometimes work in partnership with our internal team of (discipline-specific) subject matter experts on the Wealth Strategy Team (WST). WST has specialized expertise in insurance, taxation, estate/trust, and incorporation. The SFP will ensure these resources are used judiciously.
SFPs will deepen our client relationships through planning and integration of multi-disciplinary recommendations that meet client objectives and drive business results.
MDS financial planning subject matter expert and champion
Provide ongoing support and financial planning advice for MDS, and our clients with a high degree of complex needs. In MDS most of our clients have at minimum one corporation, and often complex structures involving multiple corporations, holding companies, trusts, real estate, and outside partnerships.
Work in partnership with MDS Advisors to integrate financial planning into their practice
Support MDS and the organization broadly, with financial planning expertise for workshops, seminars, webinars, or in the capacity of subject matter expert for MD’s financial planning programs and initiatives.
Become expert in the operation of MDS financial planning software (Vision Systems) and its wide range of capabilities
Embrace life-long-learning and continually build upon professional qualifications, and planning designations, while constantly improving knowledge on advanced financial planning strategies.
    Collaboration
Collaborate with our internal business partners, including: MDS Advisors, Insurance Consultants, Estate and Trust Agents, Scotia Private Banking, and the philanthropic group to integrate recommended strategies, and facilitate the timely and seamless implementation of the MDS Financial Plans.
Collaborate with our client’s external advisors, including: tax and legal advisors to fully identify the complexities inherent in our client’s circumstances. As required, work together with these external advisors to support implementation of domain specific components of our MDS Financial Plan.
    Follow MDS professional standards
Working with minimal direct day-to-day oversight, apply strong professional judgement and a thorough understanding of FP Canada/IQPF guidelines to work.
Remain current on all financial planning related topics.
Follow MDS policy, procedure, and best practice and professional codes of conduct in all client engagements.
Meet or exceed MDS Financial Plan outcomes.

Put the client at the center of everything we do; maintain a high level of client service
Contribute to the MDS culture of shared learning, open communication, and feedback
Actively participate in team meetings; share your expertise with the broader division and organization.
Continuously work to improve internal process and planning approaches
Generate new ideas, best practices, and strategies
Remain flexible in approaches to best meet client needs and facilitate implementation
Develop and facilitate training, workshops, seminars, and webinar content as required

Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation or Registered Financial Planner (RFP) designation
Planificateur Financier (Pl. Fin.) in Quebec
Personal Financial Planner (PFP) designation may be considered in combination with other professional designations and experience.
Specialized financial planning/professional designations are an asset, for example:

    Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP)
Accounting or legal designations (CA, CPA, LL.B., etc.)
Life License (LLQP); or a willingness to complete this within 12 months, and ability to obtain a Life license in any province (except QC; where SFPs typically practice in the province exclusively).

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? – We’d love to work with you if you have:

  • As an SFP your client discovery goes beyond the financial. You demonstrate a keen interest in our client’s values, desired future state, and any concerns they may have. You are willing to go beyond surface level interaction to get to the bottom of what is most important to our client. Demonstrating excellent listening and communications skills you can quickly and clearly understand a client’s perspective, which in turn directly influences your choice of strategies and how you present them to clients.
You possess a comprehensive understanding of all six core topics of financial planning (financial management, investment planning, insurance and risk management, retirement planning, tax planning, and estate planning/legal aspects) and how they integrate into holistic financial planning. In addition, you understand the unique planning needs of incorporated physicians.
You actively tailor the scope of our client’s plan to meet their goals (with plans ranging from comprehensive to modular). MDS believes that providing optimal scope leads to the best client outcomes. Judgement must be applied in this area.
Regardless of scope or complexity – you deliver advice in simple and easy to understand terms appropriate to a client’s level of understanding and financial sophistication.
You possess excellent written and verbal presentation skills. MDS meetings normally incorporate PowerPoint to supplement our plan documents. Strong proficiency with technology and the Microsoft Office suite of products is required.
You possess excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to build rapport, relationships, and trust quickly.
SFPs have a strong understanding of industry financial planning trends, advanced strategies, and the solutions offered by both MDS and our partners at Scotia.
You thrive in a flexible work environment and possess the ability to work independently while collaborating with a broad team of financial professionals.
  •  As a self-starter, you are adept at networking and engaging peers.
SFPs must know the limits of their own expertise and apply professional judgement when a client engagement exceeds this, requiring collaboration with other subject matter experts (WST, internal and external specialists).
You embrace change, can adapt, and thrive in a dynamic environment.
You have demonstrated experience and expertise with financial planning software.  Experience with Vision Systems is a strong asset.
Flexibility to travel within Canada, periodically and as required.
